When users ‘tap and hold’ on your Instagram stories, they’re essentially telling Instagram that your content is worth viewing and taking more time over. Hence, your stories will appear more often in your followers’ feed and are more likely to appear in prime position for your followers to click on. For creative businesses, this is a great opportunity to showcase and promote your taster and/or free resources (wallpapers etc), in a place where you’ll be rewarded by the platform for doing so.

Use vertical images to take up as much space as possible on the feed.

This ensures your followers, or those browsing hashtags, are exposed to your Instagram posts for longer. It might be milliseconds, but this could be the difference between somebody stopping on your photos (and seeing what you have to say) or bypassing you completely.

Even better – take some time to edit your photos so they look fab both in the grid (in a square crop), and in full size.

Add subtitles to your in-feed videos and Instagram stories.

In order to be as inclusive as possible, you should use subtitles in all online verbal communications, or provide a clear and easy to interpret overview of the conversation as part of the description. This is especially important in Instagram stories, where there isn’t any standardised way for those who are hard of hearing to view video content.

It’s also important to use subtitles for users who simply don’t want to switch their volume on – we’ve all been in a situation where we’re unable to play music out loud but have forgotten our headphones. Do the right thing and add subtitles. Instagram will thank you.

Consider your insights.

It sounds simple – if you’re looking to beat the Instagram algorithm, it’s best to know when and how the platform reacts to the different content you push out.
If Instagram always shows your posts to people when you post at 7pm on Tuesdays, but then you barely get any visibility at 9am on a Saturday morning – adapt your posting times and trial sharing your best content in the hours when your target audience are online.

Remember – there’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to the best times to post (even if marketeers tell you otherwise), it’s so personalised to you and your brand, so get testing!

Utilise all the data you have on your current followers.

Consider the needs of users who already follow you – and what they’re following you for. You’ll notice that the best bloggers are the ones who run quick surveys throughout the year, ensuring the content they’re producing is enjoyed by their audience. The more an audience resonates with your posts, the more likely they are to like, comment or follow you – which all helps you become more favoured in the world of the Instagram algorithm.

Use the right number of hashtags – but don’t use completely irrelevant ones.

Instagram gives you the opportunity to use 30 hashtags at a time – and you should use these! There’s never been any proven data to say Instagram penalise users who actively post up to the limit; after all, if Instagram wanted people to only use 20 hashtags, surely that would be limit instead?

What we do know is that Instagram promotes relevance – so if you own a kitchen company, don’t start adding #harrystyles to pictures of your limestone worktops. Unless Harry Styles has visited your store to buy some, in which case – keep promoting it!
